It saddens me to inform you that after a 13 month battle with pancreatic cancer, Stephen J. Qualman, MD passed away on Saturday August 30, 2008. Dr. Qualman dedicated his life’s work to improving the life of others with cancer through research. In his own battle, he continued to support and participate in clinical trials to further the cause of someday finding the cure. Dr. Qualman established the Biopathology Center (BPC) at Columbus Children’s Hospital 24 years ago. This resource has grown to now support Children’s Oncology Group, Gynecologic Oncology Group and is the pediatric component of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN). The BPC currently houses over 1,000,000 specimens that are clinically annotated and distributes over 50,000 specimens per year to cancer researchers worldwide. Dr. Qualman’s contributions to cancer research have been innumerable and will continue to benefit cancer patients for many years to come.
Steve’s wishes were that any gifts be made to support the Stephen J. Qualman Fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
