Report from the Distinctions and Awards Committee


For the Spring Meeting of the Society in San Diego, the Research committee designated 14 abstracts as eligible for the Vawter Award and 3 for the Neustein Award.

The Vawter Award went to Barina Aqil for her abstract entitled “Are Micromegakaryocytes Specific for Refractory Cytopenia of Childhood (RCC)? A Study of 38 Pediatric Patients with Thrombocytopenia Unrelated to RCC.”

The Neustein Award was given to Ilana Ariel for her presentation “The “Myotrophoblast” – Endothelin-1-Induced Contraction of the Modified Spiral Artery of the Rat.”

Among 6 nominees for the Gilbert-Barness Prize, the winner was Raj Kapur, for his paper entitled “Histologic Delineation of the Transition Zone in Short-Segment Hirschsprung Disease,” published in Pediatric and Developmental Pathology, 2013.

Among 2 nominees for the Lotte Strauss prize, the winner was Benjamin Wilkins, for his paper entitled “p53-Mediated Biliary Defects Caused by Knockdown of cirh1a, the Zebrafish Homolog of the Gene Responsible for North American Indian Childhood Cirrhosis,” published in PLOS One, 2013.

The outgoing President, Glenn Taylor, issued Distinguished Colleague Awards to Miguel Reyes-Mugica and to Ted Pysher.

With the adjournment of the 2014 Spring meeting, three members join this committee. They are John Choi, Kandi Stallings-Archer, and Drucilla Roberts. Dinesh Rakheja, Raj Kapur, and Brenda Waters leave the committee. The Chairmanship of this Committee is now transferred to Fusun Gundogan.
